Comics champion Eben Burgoon responded on Instagram to my last post and pointed out that the image of The Atom fighting his way out of a Venus flytrap was indeed connected to the Sacramento arts scene and not, as I had assumed, just a fun comics-related image. I replied to Eben and said I would have to “hit the books again and keep digging,” but then I googled “atom venus flytrap sacramento artist” and the answer came right up! Sacramento-born artist Mel Ramos reappropriated the cover to The Atom #1 as a Pop Art painting titled (appropriately enough), “The Atom,” which is part of the Crocker Art Museum’s collection. So OF COURSE I thought that image, which might most perfectly encapsulate the crossover of art and comics at the Crocker, was just something Wisnia chose at random! LOL

Eben was also kind enough to DM me an explanatory article from the Crocker about Wisnia’s poster, which includes a brief discussion of all the artists and cartoonists referenced, including the last image I couldn’t see in my screenshot from Instagram, which was “Ladies Dance” by Gladys Nilsson, who lived in Sacramento for a time and currently has a retrospective show at the Crocker.

Anyway, thanks to Chris Wisnia for making such a fantastic poster and for not taking undue offense at my error, and thanks to Eben Burgoon for commissioning the poster and helping me out!
