Colored-marker drawing of a meaty human hand gripping a cartoon-style lizard by the neck. The lizard weeps and liquid flies out of its mouth; meanwhile, its legs squeeze through the fingers of the human hand and pop off in a spray of blood. Along the right side of the drawing are red block letters reading, “forget.” “So the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.’”--Genesis 3:14, NIV.

During a class taken over the summer I was tasked with creating three of my automatic drawings based on a single theme. This is something with which my subconscious has refused to cooperate in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised that it worked this time (my success was no doubt due to the class’s excellent instructor and supportive fellow students).

So, here’s the first in a trio of themed drawings, “Crawl” (colored marker on paper; 9” x 12”), which depicts the moment in the Old Testament when God discovers that Adam and Eve have eaten from the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God curses the serpent, who gave them the fruit, to crawl on its belly and eat dust the rest of its life (Genesis 3:14, NIV). It may be a little difficult to see in the drawing, but God is squeezing the serpent so hard its legs are popping off between His heavenly digits. Come back tomorrow for another Biblically-themed drawing of weird-looking cartoon characters!
